CPR/AED Fact Sheet
CPR & Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
Fact Sheet
As of April 2015

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

• EMS treats nearly 300,000 victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year in the U.S.
• Less than eight percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital survive.
• Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time. Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors.
• Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic, which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked. A heart attack may cause cardiac arrest.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Less than one-third of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR.
• Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival, especially if aed arrives in the 1st minute
• The most effective rate for chest compressions is 100/120 PER MINUTE

                                          HEART STATISTICS 2015

                                 FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

* Coronary Heart Disease( CHD) is the single largest killer of american males and females

* About every 29 seconds an american will suffer a coronary event, and about every minute someone will die from one.

* About 225,00 people a year die of CHF without being hospitalized. Many of these are sudden deaths caused by cardiac arrest

*Its a myth that heart disease is a mans disease-it kills more than half a million women every year(nearly one female death a minute).Thats more lives than the next 14 causes of death combined, including breast cancer.

*42% of women who have heart attacks die within a year compared to 24% of men.African American Women between the ages of 35-74 are even at more risk. They are 69% more likely to to die of coronary heart disease than white women.

*Patients living with heart disease can now take a painless but powerful new test to determine their risk of heart attack thanks to the most advanced CT technology today taking less than 5 mins to do.They call it Calcium scoring which assentialy is a measurement of the amount of calcium in your coronary artery ,EVERYONE at the age of 50 should get this procedure done because this disease is PREVENTABLE!!  If your calcium score is high this could alert the patient and cardiologist to the presence of this disease and possibly extending your life..This test is very affordable and could cost less than 100$..Insurance companies are beggining to pay for this procedure in some states but will require legislation to mandate it in others. If you or in any one in your family has risk factors which include, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol,or high blood pressure should be alerted to this life saving exam.
